Alea, the Mausoleum of Maussollos

Some times, when a journey begins, we have to look at the past to know where to go. Alea, the Latin word used by Julius Caesar when we crossed the Rubicon River (Alea Jacta Est) is that precise moment: a beginning in the past. Alea stands for the unknown of a new journey, of a new adventure, from which, everything could be changed.

Diane is arriving to the ancient city of Halicarnassus. Behind, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world: the Mausoleum. This is also a mark of a new beginning: the mark of the death of the ancient King Mausollos, but also the mark of his new life after death. New unknown life (Alea) for him, and certainly a new journey beginning for all of our western civilization: even today, the word “Mausoleum” is directly coming from the name of this King.

What fortune or misfortune is awaiting for Diane, the women in the boat? She don’t know yet, but even her tiniest action led our present to be like it his know.

...

A lot of research for this image. From knowing what kind of bees exist in Caria (were is The Mausoleum, modern south Anatolia) from knowing how really looked like the Mausoleum, nothing was left at random. Yes, in spite of the title "Alea". I can even say to you that the wood they used for the boat were fir :)

This picture is a new thing for me: I just had a very crappy lineart, not really detailed, and I tried to paint everything. A different approach, which permits me to gain time, I only paint what matters the most, and I progressively "sharp" the image. Uploaded the final version about 45 minutes before the deadline :XD:

great work! i like your style of painting: it has a certain optimism in them. great background and figure srawing too!
Oh, just one thing: umbrellas (the fold out type despicted here) were invented in China, and the Greeks (Greeeks, right? In the pic?) hadn't a trade relationship with them, so Diane counld not possibly have an umbrella :)
Great work anyhow!

You're right about the (modern) umbrella being invented in China, or at least, our modern umbrella come from there. But romans used them, don't worry about that, it was called the umbraculum. We have a lot of ancient literrature, it was an elegant feminine object, and no men would ever use one. It was mainly used for protecting from the sun (that's why it is called "umbrella" from umbraculum » umbra = shadow, umbrella, little shadow) but also rain. The use of umbrella was lost after the collapse of the Roman Empire.

This fold out type you are seeing here were found in a erm... don't know the english word for "bas-relief" but we have ancient visual sources of this, here's the sketch of the ancient source (not my sketch) » [link]

Superb detail as usual. I like the little bee on the log...does that have any meaning?

Yeah, I'm glad you asked. This is a mark of the season, end of autumn. This kind of bee is seeking for food before hibernating, and only this kind of ivy have the "food" for them at this period of the year.

So, for those who are completely crazy like me, it would be easy to say that this is the end of autumn simply looking at the bee...

:XD: and I'm not even joking, I thought about all that XD
